Mitigating the effects of climate change and putting sustainability into the learning environment.

September 13, 2020

Selkirk College is dedicated to mitigating the impacts of climate change and placing sustainability into the learning environment. In 2019, the team at Hakai Energy designed, installed, and commissioned a robust solar photovoltaic energy system on the roof of the Selkirk College’s main campus building. The system consists of a 275-module custom rooftop solar array. The 100kW grid-tied photovoltaic system is mounted on a ballasted flat roof mounting system, and tied in with paralleled commercial string inverters.

Selkirk College is living proof that large-scale organizations can make better, future-proof decisions and lead by example. With the ability to generate their own electricity with solar power, Selkirk College is able to protect itself from escalating utility prices while ensuring the school utilizes clean emission solar electric power for decades to come. The system was designed to produce more than 110 megawatt hours of electricity per year, and has a projected lifetime of 30+ years. Ample roof space, a significant amount of electrical load, large electrical distribution systems, and the fact that they are long-term asset makes educational institutions the ideal host for a solar photovoltaic array.
