Powering Newton Cove Resort with Clean, Reliable Energy
Located in Esperanza Inlet, Newton Cove Resort is a floating, off-grid coastal destination with quick access to some of BC’s premier salmon and halibut fishing, just minutes from the open Pacific. Operating in a remote marine environment, the resort relies on dependable, around-the-clock power to support daily operations while maintaining a high-quality guest experience.
To meet these demands, Hakai expanded an existing renewable energy system originally designed and installed for the resort. The latest upgrade adds 64 kW of solar across 134 modules, along with a third 234 kWh battery bank, increasing on-site generation and storage capacity while integrating seamlessly with the existing system. This shift away from diesel generation improves reliability and significantly reduces noise, emissions, and fuel-related impacts on both guests and the surrounding environment.
This upgraded system enables Newton Cove Resort to:
- Generate and store more clean energy on its floating platform, delivering consistent, reliable power in a fully off-grid environment
- Dramatically reduce generator run time, fuel consumption, and operational emissions, while minimizing generator noise, diesel smells, and smoke to elevate the guest experience
- Lower operational complexity and maintenance requirements, reducing reliance on frequent, specialized generator servicing
- Eliminate the need for regular diesel fuel transport, reducing spill risk and helping protect a sensitive marine ecosystem
By expanding its solar and battery capacity, Newton Cove Resort is now less dependent on diesel generators and has greater control over its energy supply. This increased energy independence directly supports the resort’s sustainability initiatives by expanding the use of solar power, reducing fuel consumption and marine fuel transport, strengthening proactive fuel spill prevention, and minimizing environmental impact in the surrounding coastal waters.
