When I started Hakai Energy Solutions more than 15 years ago, it was about helping one off-grid lodge reduce their diesel dependency.

During that first project at the Hakai Institute, we learned as we went, identifying new technologies, tackling the challenges of integration and attracting talented people. What we were doing was new, and we were writing the playbook in real time.

After implementing our first off-grid system, diesel use on Calvert Island dropped by more than 80% — from up to 500 litres per day to less than 100. Through the process, our team became experts at building robust and reliable renewable energy systems in remote coastal communities, igniting the first spark of what would become Hakai Energy Solutions.

Fifteen years later, those early values continue to guide us as we’ve expanded to a 50-person team specializing in off-grid, commercial, public, and residential solar installations across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

Earlier this year, Hakai was acquired by SkyFire Energy, beginning a new chapter for our company. While many may think an acquisition is a bad thing, I can tell you that this coming together is rooted in shared values and the potential to make an even bigger impact through widespread renewable energy adoption. Together, we’re building the kind of future we want to leave behind.

I'd like to take a moment to introduce SkyFire Energy and share why I'm proud to be joining their team.
SkyFire is one of the oldest solar companies in Western Canada and is celebrating its 25th year. That’s important. Government incentives typically attract waves of players to the solar market, bringing with them sales-first practices that too often come at the expense of long-term client relationships and warranty needs. A big part of what drew me to SkyFire was that we were aligned on our shared value of integrity.  We back up our work and do what’s right for our customers. The company wholeheartedly assumes 100% of my customers' warranties.

SkyFire's employee-ownership model was another draw. All employees in the company are offered an opportunity to buy shares, rewarding employees for their contributions to the success of the business. Hakai employees will be invited to join the employee ownership program this year.

As a co-owner, I’m invested with the larger team at SkyFire Energy. As owners, rest assured that we are personally invested in the success of every project we deliver.

On top of that, SkyFire Energy is a certified B Corporation. The “B” stands for benefit, with the belief that companies should not just serve shareholders but benefit all stakeholders: customers, community, workers, and the environment. No greenwashing here. SkyFire Energy is independently certified on environmental, social, and governance standards.

For our customers, know that our quality, team, and commitment stay the same. We just have more resources now as part of SkyFire Energy.

I’d like to acknowledge the Hakai team, who over the past several months have had to adapt to new systems and ways of working. Truthfully, there have been bumps along the way, and that's to be expected. I want to thank the team for their patience and flexibility.

Building Hakai has been an incredible experience and one I don't take lightly. Making sure our company is here for you, for the long-term, is central to my decision-making.

By joining SkyFire Energy, we're putting our company in the hands of people who are deeply invested in its future, the employee owners. As a B Corp, we are held to a higher standard of accountability to customers, community and the planet.

Thank you for being part of Hakai. I am grateful to our customers and community for supporting us over the years. I’m looking forward to an even brighter future by joining forces with SkyFire Energy. Together, we’re building energy for good.
