Clayoquot Wilderness Resort Named Finalist for Canada Solar Project of the Year

Hakai Energy Solutions is proud to announce that our Clayoquot Wilderness Resort microgrid project has been named a finalist for Solar Builder Magazine’s Canada Solar Project of the Year Award.

Located in a remote region north of Tofino and accessible only by seaplane or boat, Clayoquot Wilderness Resort is now home to British Columbia’s largest solar and battery microgrid. The system features an 824 kW solar array paired with a 1.6 MWh battery storage system, allowing the resort to dramatically reduce its reliance on diesel generators.

The result: an 80% reduction in diesel use and an annual carbon offset of approximately 480,000 kilograms — the equivalent of removing over 100 passenger vehicles from the road every year.

Transporting materials and equipment by barge made this project a complex logistical challenge, but it also showcased what’s possible when technical innovation meets a commitment to sustainability. The completed system stands as a model for what off-grid renewable energy can achieve in even the most remote settings.

We’re honoured to see this project recognized as one of Canada’s top solar achievements.
